A surgical site infection (SSI) is an infection that occurs after surgery in the part of the body where the surgery took place. The most common microorganisms causing surgical site infection are Staphylococcus aureus (20 percent), Coagulase negative staphylococcus (14 percent) and enterococcus (12 percent).
